After witnessing his father's crucifixion by Roman soldiers, Daniel
bar Jamin is fired by a single passion: to avenge his father's death by driving the
Roman legions from the land of Israel. Consumed by hatred, Daniel leads a dangerous
life living with an outlaw band in the hills outside his village, spying and plotting,
impatiently waiting to take revenge.
In nearby Capernaum, a rabbi is teaching a different lesson. Time and again Daniel is
drawn to the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, only to turn away, disappointed and
confused by Jesus's lack of action in opposing the Romans. Headstrong and devoid
of tenderness, Daniel is also heedless of the love and loyalty of those around him,
dragging them down his destructive path toward disaster.
Winner of the 1962 Newbery Medal,
The Bronze Bow
is the story of a boy's
tormented journey from a blind, confining hatred to his acceptance and understanding
of love.
Elizabeth George Speare (1908-1994), born and raised in Melrose, Massachusetts, earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Boston University, taught high school, married, and raised two children before beginning her career as a writer.
