Terri and Paul 4Ever
High school sweethearts Paul and Terri had been married for eleven years and had two beautiful children
together. Early in their marriage, they'd moved from northern New Jersey to Cleveland, Ohio, so Paul could accept a
better job with a larger company. But Terri was miserable. The youngest child in a large Italian family, she missed
her parents and siblings, and Paul felt Terri couldn't manage to do even the simplest things on her own, without
her mom and sisters to provide input and guidance. Paul convinced her to get a part-time job as a teacher's aide,
thinking this would increase her confidence. But she still felt homesick and alone. This led to a great deal of
tension in the marriage, and Paul eventually moved out. Terri decided to finish the school year in Ohio and then
move back to New Jersey to be closer to her family.
Paul rented a small studio apartment near his office, and plunged himself into his work. He dutifully took the
children on outings every weekend, but the knowledge that they soon would be two states away made their time
together almost painful. And he missed Terri, too – suddenly her insecurities didn't seem like such a big deal any
more. But he was proud (he knew she was too) and he couldn't figure out a way to work himself back into her
life.
But in early April, Terri received a late-night phone call that changed everything. Terri learned that her
father had been the victim of a drunk driving accident and was in critical condition. Her sisters begged her to
come back to New Jersey immediately. She tossed a few things in an overnight bag, woke the children, and they all
piled into the car. Terri turned the key in the ignition and was assailed by a terrible grinding sound. This car
wasn't going anywhere.
Suddenly all her pent-up emotions overflowed, and she sat in the driver's seat and sobbed. Her oldest child,
terrified at seeing his mother so distraught, pulled Terri's cell phone from her purse and phoned his dad. Paul was
there in a matter of minutes. Scrubbing the tears from her eyes, Terri tried to demonstrate what was wrong with the
car, but Paul was having none of it.
“Everybody in Daddy's car,” he ordered. “Grandpa Pat needs us. We're going to New Jersey.”
On the way, as the children slept, Terri and Paul worked out their differences. It turned out that Paul had
downloaded an internet solution called “The Magic of Making Up.” And he'd learned a lot. Paul, who had been so devoted to his new
company, said he hadn't realized how empty life without Terri and the children would be. And Terri confessed
that during their time apart that she'd learned to handle many things by herself – fixing cars not being one of
them! She just missed her family so much, and as much as she enjoyed working with her class at school, Cleveland
would never feel like home to her.
“So, if we moved back to New Jersey – all of us – everything would be okay?” Paul asked.
“You'd do that for me?” Terri asked incredulously. “What about your job?”
“It's not the only job in the world,” Paul said. “But you ARE my only wife.”
By the time they reached New Jersey, Terri's father had rallied, and now was expected to make a full recovery.
And Terri and Paul's marriage had done the same. It would take work, but Paul's willingness to compromise something
that meant a great deal to him had won back his wife's love.
Did you notice how Paul and Terri each grew and changed a little bit during this story? Terri grew as she
learned to handle the responsibilities of her new job, but at first Paul didn't even recognize this. Paul grew to
realize that jobs are not the most important thing in the world – family is – and he learned to recognize the power
in Terri's strong family values. This is just ONE of the many, many tips you'll learn in The Magic of Making Up. Let T Dub tell you exactly what you need to do to make your
happy ending come true – just like Paul and Terri.
